A valid passport and a visa are necessary in order to be granted entrance into Northern Cyprus . During the first entrance to the North Cyprus, a residence permit is given. Students should apply for a residence permit in order to live in North Cyprus.

The majority of students choose to rent a house or unit close to campus in the city or surrounding area. Renting in Northern Cyprus is regulated by the State Government and students wishing to rent should familiarize themselves with their rights and responsibilities before embarking on any agreement

Gazimagusa city offers fully self contained, fully furnished townhouses in a newly developed accommodation complexes located only a 15-minute walk or a five-minute bus ride to the University campus.

Rent varies depending on the type of housing and location and excludes utilities. Students are expected to pay an up-front bond and a month or six (6) months rent in advance. If you’re going to pay in cash, it may be a good idea to try your luck in bargaining for the final rental price.

The current house price list is as follows:

2 bedroom house with fully equipped furniture _____ $400 – $500 /month

3 bedroom house with fully equipped furniture _____ $500 – $600 /month

Due to the steadily increasing amount of students and shortage of rental properties, most landlords are now asking for six months rent in advance.

In order to protect their rights, students are advised to sign a rental contract.

Furnished apartments are a more expensive housing choice, but may be suitable for students/staff/parent who require a short lease (1-2 weeks), need somewhere to stay for a few weeks while looking for accommodation, or who need somewhere for visiting friends and relatives to stay. They usually provide all furniture, bedding, linen , cooking appliances and utensils and laundry facilities.

Most apartments offer rates that are cheaper the longer you plan to stay – eg . there will be one rate per night if you are staying for one week, another rate if you are staying for 2 weeks, and a cheaper rate per week if you are staying for more than three months.

Many apartments are serviced, meaning they are cleaned and the linen is changed regularly like in a hotel, but most offer unserviced options and will be unserviced for stays of three months or more.

Hostel accommodation is a popular option for interstate, country and overseas students. Student hostels usually offer single bedroom accommodation, however many offer a limited number of twin, double and triple share rooms. Each bedroom is fully furnished and students have access to a shared bathroom, laundry, lounge and recreational activities.

Majority of the hostels offer computer facilities. Most hostels are self- catering, however there are many that provide meals. Occasionally, they have a mix of both.

Gas, electricity and water are generally included in the set fee. Many hostels provide a private telephone line in each room with an additional point for computer use. Students are responsible for the costs associated with these services if they choose to connect.

Most hostels are located within the University campus.

Hostels offer different lengths of stay on a semester/academic year basis. Bonds are payable and 2 weeks notice is required to vacate rooms.

GIRNE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY

Wherever you travel to in North Cyprus, the history comes alive…

For nine thousand years, Cyprus has been a melting pot of great civilizations; from the Neolithic settlements on the northern coast to the Egyptian, Persian, Roman, Venetian, Ottoman and British Empires. Its strategic location at the cross-roads of East and West has bestowed the island with a rich and colorful history spanning centuries.

During the course of its vibrant past, the island has been visited by the Romans, Alexander the Great and Richard the Lion Heart among many others, each leaving his own unique footprint.

First Settlers

For a feel of how it all began, the island’s museums are worth a visit for their fascinating array of artifacts discovered in cave dwellings dating from around 7000BC, the time of the first inhabitants of Cyprus.

From 3000-700 BC, Cyprus began to emerge as a trading centre, with copper mines drawing merchants from across the Mediterranean. Attracted to the growing opportunities, settlers arrived from Anatolia and Phoenicians from Syria, bringing new Levantine architecture, ceramics and metal workings to the island.

Melting Pot of Civilizations

The Persians first adopted Cyprus as a base for their wars with Greece in the 6th Century BC. The wars lasted until 333 BC when Alexander the Great brought the Persian Empire to a sudden end. The Ptolemies of Egypt ruled for the next 250 years, a glorious period punctuated by Rome’s invasion of the island in 48 BC. The Roman rule of the island only lasted a few years, as Julius Caesar bestowed the island to his lover, Cleopatra, the last of the Ptolemies as a gift of love. Only following her death was Emperor Augustus able to return Cyprus to the fold of the Roman Empire.

Between the 1st and 10th Centuries, multiple communities emerged on the island, with Muslim and Byzantine settlers coexisting in relative harmony until 965 AD, when the Byzantines took full control of the island after defeating the Muslim Caliphate’s Egyptian fleet.

Byzantine rule lasted until the 12th Century, when King Richard the Lion-Heart handed the island to Guy de Lusignan, a member of the French Medieval Royalty, to finance his expeditions. The Lusignans inhabited the island for 300 years, from the 12th Century until 1489, when the Venetians captured the island and built the impressive Girne Castle and bestowed the island with the celebrated architecture of Gazimağusa (Famagusta) and Lefkoşa (Nicosia).

Modern Cyprus

The Ottoman period in Cyprus began in 1571 and lasted for more than three centuries. During this time-period, the two Cypriot communities: Turkish and Greek began to emerge. It was during the later years of the Ottoman rule, in an agreement dating back to 1869, that the British were granted the right to govern Cyprus under the Sultan. In 1960, the Treaty of London and Zurich were signed to grant independence to Cyprus as a partnership state between the Turkish and Greek Communities of the island. The guarantors of the new state were Britain, Greece, and Turkey. In 1963, relations between the two communities separated by language, culture and religion deteriorated and a civil war broke out. The United Nations sent in troops in an attempt to restore peace, creating the Green Line, which effectively divided the two communities.

In 1974, Greece attempted a military coup in conjunction with the Greek Cypriot National Guard in a bid to achieve ENOSIS (Idea of union with Greece). In response to this bid and following a consultation with the British government, Turkey intervened to protect the Turkish Cypriot community duly exercising its guarantor role.

Cyprus Today

The Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC) was formally established in 1983 and today the island remains divided. The TRNC is a fully democratic state and peace subsists across both sides of the island. On 23 April 2003, the borders between the North and South were opened and it is now also very easy to get around, making North Cyprus a truly excellent destination for those who dream of a holiday steeped in history.

As you explore the island, you will certainly enjoy the enduring echoes of the island’s multicultural heritage; a country upon which countless civilizations have left their colorful and fascinating imprints, waiting for you to explore.

Yeah TRNC is a small country, calm and friendly region to study. Unfortunately, jobs are quite scarce in TRNC and wages are kinda low. I will only advise students to travel to TRNC if they have full financial backings to sponsor their education due to scarcity of jobs.

    1. Hello,

Your son must send his payment slip to the university and after confirmation of his payment, he will be issued CONFIRMATION LETTER addressed to Turkish Embassy Abuja. Then will check the Turkish embassy website for procedure to secure the transit visa to TRNC. May i know the department of your son? then i can comment on the fees. Although Accommodation alone ranges 1500-2700USD per year and feeding ranges 100-250USD monthly, so what you pid is even less than a first semester tuition fees. The lowest fees for first semester at EMU is 1833USD.

  25. Hi, I have some queries.
I got accepted at EMU for the M.A International Relations (Non-thesis) programme.
    With a 50 percent scholarship.
The fee is not mentioned on my letter and neither on the website as it is yet to be updated.
How many courses am i supposed to have?

Also can i pay semester wise, the courses fee and dormitory charges?
Also I am a pakistani, so what do i need in order to travel to TRNC, i plan to travel by turkish airlines and do not want to leave the transit lounge in istanbul airport. Do i still need a turkish visa?
How much bank statement am I supposed to have if i have already paid the semester fee? and cash in hand to show at the airport?

Lastly, what is the approximate food budget monthly in EMU?

    1. The fees without scholarship is 9200USD for whole program. You must pan obtain from pay minimum of 4000USD before you arrive and you will need visa to enter TRNC and you can from Islamabad.

    1. Good day Mr Himaid,

If your son pass the IGCSE with very good grades, it is enough for admission or he may support it with good AL exams also. Also, occasionally due to quotas and competition, he may be admitted in pharmacy and after 1 semester with good grades (above 3.5) he can be allowed to switch to medicine. So he can be admitted, if you are ready pls let me know.

      1. Thank you very much for your valuable response, he has not done AL yet, but since the IGCSE is suffiecient we are ready.

please feel free to contact me directly on my e-mail if needed.

      2. The GPA is 4 point here and due to the tight quotas for medicine…starting with pharmacy may be another entry route. You can kindly email me his documents (high school results, any transcripts he has from the school, international passport page and passport photo). You can send clear copies of these documents to either trendeduconsult@gmail.com or skull4una@gmail.com. As soon as the documents are received, they will be registered with the chosen department and update pass across to you.

    1. Hey Richard,

Its nice to really want to study in Cyprus. The environment is conducive for learning and affordable. However, for undergraduate applicants, the age limit is 25yrs and some universities do admit students around 26yrs for undergraduate studies. If you are going for undergraduate and you are 31, none of the university will admit you. Also, all applicants are considered for 25-50% scholarship and the fees will range between 3500-4000USD inclusive of 50% scholarship per year.

    1. Hi Ignatius,

Thanks for the interest. The cost of Master in Pharmacy and related fields ranges 5000-6500USD for whole program and this includes scholarship award. There are only few casual jobs here which are usually scarce to even find. Also, you wont be able to practice the pharmacy here since you will need an exam for state recognition.
